„And if you fill his painting, do you get any bonus?” asked me one of my interlocutors. I was standing then next to the fence with a golden frame and a camera in the hand and I was waiting for my host to tell me about the next holy picture, which will enrich a collection.
Conversation, posing, photo, waiting for the result, staring at the contours emerging from the white photo paper, title, putting the picture in the frame, thanking, thanks, goodbye.
Time to move on…


The first week of my September’s trip I spent mostly on walking… and asking questions. I asked about paintings, wedding and first communion memorabilia, the images of saints, the stories of roadside shrines. All of these are worth preservation, especially when they are old. “It is for the future” – said one of the Ostałówek inhabitants. All seemed to be justified. Also the fact that the inhabitants will be on the picture, as owners, holders, sometimes as a background.
Unexpectedly the frame started to include much more than memorial images of saints. It became a record of the road, a pretext of conversation, a story of a place, a portrait of the inhabitants, a collection of what is valuable and fleeting at the same time…
In the end I asked less and less questions. I felt that I no longer carry the frame, but it led me…
